Mill Creek No. 1 (Redlands)

In 1892 while Decker and Baldwin were still building the San Antonio Plant, H.H Sinclair and capitalist Henry Fisher, both of Redlands, formed the Redlands Light and Power Company. They knew about hydroelectric power successes in the area, and they had a customer for the power. The Union Ice Company, in adjacent Mentone, would buy power to run its plant. But it didn't like the unwieldy A.C. motors.

Fortunately Decker was hired to solve the problem, and began working on the specifications even before the San Antonio Plant was working. Decker specified a new three-phase generator design that would allow the necessary transmission distance, but also provided a smooth and unsupervised motor operation. The newly formed General Electric Company took on the job of building the generator to Decker's specifications. The generator worked! The transmission was successful and the Union Ice Company was able to drop the price of ice due to the lower power cost.

Decker's power generation and delivery system was so successful that it became the Southern California standard.
